Howling at the Sky
I had the good fortune of visiting the Wolf Conservation Center (WCC) in South Salem, NY in January 2010. They assist with breeding of endangered species of wolves and reintroduction of wolves into their natural habitat. Interesting place. It was a freezing cold day (17 degrees and snowing, but much colder with the wind chill). By the end of the day, I could barely feel my fingers, but the wolves were beautiful and I am lucky to have spent time there.
It’s funny, when I told my mother that I was going to go to the WCC to take pictures, she asked, “What will you do with the pictures?” She seemed puzzled about why anyone would do this. I had to laugh…when I go somewhere with the purpose of taking pictures, it never occurs to me to think about what I’ll do with them, other than look at them. It must seem strange to someone who doesn’t really take pictures to understand why someone would just go somewhere, take photos, and then not do anything with them – seems like it is without purpose. But, I think the activity has a purpose – even if it is just to see something new…or see something familiar in an unfamiliar way. Photography, particularly wildlife photography, is personally rejuvenating. I get a rush every time I photograph something.

A sad update – the wolf in this photo, Apache, died today of cancer. He was 12 years old and a special member of the pack. R.I.P. Apache.
